One
of the beauties of the English language is that it allows you to express
yourself in a detailed manner. It's vivid vocabulary and complex structure
gives writers the opportunity to describe even their most intimate sensations.
This however, wasn't always the case it was only after the invasion of the
Normans that the English vocabulary grew substantially; a total of “10,000
words” (The Story of English )were added to the
language.
Nevertheless, these
new words brought some complications to the language. This was mainly because
at that time no restrictions had been made regarding word spelling and as the
printing press was created different publishers, almost all “idiosyncratic
speller” (The Story of English) would write words
with different spelling. Leading to the creation of "...chaotic spelling
conventions..."(The Story of English) However, at that
time this wasn't the only problem the English language was facing. The other
problem described how there were "...five distinct varieties of
English..." (The Story of English) roaming around the
earth and even though they all rose from the same basis, they were all
distinctly different. Making this a problem in daily life communication between
citizens. Affecting not only relationships but development as well. This is the
reason why the English language has had so many changes throughout time and it has
finally ended up with the creation of a more practical and worldwide comprehensible language.
